From the end of the 1950's attempts to introduce the predator Perillus bioculatus have been made in several European countries. This article reviews the main results of studies carried out during the last two decades on the ecology, behaviour and cultural enemies of the predator as well as on its practical use. The species has not yet become established anywhere in Europe, presumably due to some of its ecological and behavioural characteristics. Its direct use against the Colorado beetle by repeated mass release into potato fields has not proved feasible.
